Stay Out of the Water! Spill Gushes Tons of Raw Sewage in San Clemente

A mile-long stretch of beach around the San Clemente Pier has been closed for health reasons because of a sewage spill.

An electrical failure at the city’s Main Pump Station, caused a back-up that sent 5,200 gallons of raw sewage gushing into the ocean at the base of the San Clemente Pier. The spill created hazardous health conditions for swimmers and surfers, triggering a beach closure for a half-mile to either side of the pier.

The closure is likely to remain in place until 1 p.m. Wednesday. According to a statement issued by the city, “Sewer flow has been restored with temporary bypass pumps, and, at this time, City staff is evaluating steps for a permanent repair. Final water samples will be taken tomorrow and analyzed the morning of April 1st, and if normal levels of micro-organisms are noted in the sample, the beach can then be reopened. Until such time, beachgoers should avoid contact with ocean and bay waters in these areas.”

In the meantime, lifeguards are stationed along the coast and flags have been posted to warn people of the danger.
