Whether you backpack solo, take a guided tour, or stay at a resort, traveling is always an adventure. Martin Buber, the famous philosopher once said, “All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware.” His statement rings true today. Every time we travel, we open our minds to something new. For the most part, travel is full of positive experiences, but along the way you’re also bound to face challenges and awkward moments that you’ll look back on and laugh. Here is a list of things to remember, watch out for, and enjoy on your next big trip.

#1 Don’t Drink the Water

Unless you’re traveling within your home country and know that the local water is safe, the best decision is to simply avoid any tap water. Bottled water is the way to go, especially in less industrialized nations. Contaminated water can wreak havoc on your body and on your trip. Save yourself a stretch of unwanted trips to the bathroom and days spent lying in bed.

#2 Bring a Journal

Have you climbed a mountain, learned a new language, or straddled the Equator? Whatever you accomplish while traveling remains a glorious and exciting memory. But time passes and memories fade. Do yourself a favor and jot down how you felt. Adding photos and video clips will keep your memories fresh for years to come. Not only will rereading your travel journal awaken your passion for travel, it may serve as a precious keepsake for generations to come.

#3 Learn the Language

Learning a new language is no easy feat. It takes time, effort, and practice. Chances are, you’re not spending an extended amount of time in a foreign country, but if you are, brush up on your Spanish, Portuguese, or whatever the native tongue is in your destination. There’s nothing more frustrating than being stuck at the bus station or being unable to find a place to stay because you don’t know the language. You don’t need to be fluent by any means, but learn a few words and phrases. It’ll make your life so much easier.

#4 Enjoy Your Surroundings

It’s not every day you’re lulled to sleep by the sound of the ocean or get to trek to the temple of the sun at Machu Picchu. The world is full of exciting destinations, cultures, and the beauty of nature. If your passion for travel is more than a hobby you may consider a career in environmental law. Environmental law schools equip you with the knowledge you need to help keep our planet lush, healthy, and fertile.

#5 Do Something Unique

A vacation is the perfect time to try something new. Take a surfing lesson, try a different food, or ride a camel. Whatever your interests are, do something unique, something you’ll remember for the rest of your life.

Travel is full of surprises, both good and bad. Whether you travel to get away or to learn more about the world around you, never stop doing it. Life is all about learning, and traveling is one of the best ways to do it.
